A look inside a Portland government building-turned-startup base

The Block 300 building, the former home of The General Services Administration, recently received a facelift.

The idea is that the structure could attract upscale tenants, including tech companies. The former Robert Duncan Plaza building, at 308 S.W. Second Ave. in the Skidmore District, had occupied over 150,000 square feet.

Melvin Mark Cos. constructed the 10-story, 360,000-square-foot office building in 1991. Armed security guards occupied the lobby and the exterior featured “You’re under surveillance” signs. It’s perhaps best known as the site of a 2000 logging protest.

But since the government agency left in late 2013, work has started on a complete overhaul of the interior and real estate management firm J&L has leased around 75 percent of the space.

Tech companies Puppet Labs and Cvent have already agreed to lease 74,784 and 14,143 square feett respectively. Builders Swinerton have signed up for 5,564 square feet. The first tenant is scheduled to move in this November.

The lobby renovations are complete and all other improvements are underway. The building has just received LEED gold certification.

The marketing firm behind the project, SRM Architecture & Marketing, won an award for its work.

Around 55,000 sq ft of office space is still available for leasing. The seventh floor features an open floor plate of nearly 40,000 square feet, while an additional 16,500 square feet are available on the second floor.block
