Local Bookstores You’ll Want to Know

With the number of rainy, mild months this region has, it’s unsurprising how many book lovers are drawn to Portland. After all, what’s better than curling up on a rainy Sunday morning with a cup of tea and new book? Or, for this time of year, hanging out on the Oregon coast with the latest paperback? Well, Portland’s got you covered as far as local bookstores are concerned. Here’s a list of some of our favorites.

Annie Bloom’s Books

This local favorite is tucked away in Portland’s Multnomah Village, located just south of the city and perfect for browsing on a weekend afternoon. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the resident cat, Molly. She tends to supervise from the front counter but also enjoys mingling with customers around the store, so make sure to tell her hi.

Powell’s City of Books

Ah, yes. Of course we couldn’t forget the famous City of Books. But how could you? Powell’s is a booklover’s dream if you know what you’re looking for. Taking up an entire city block and several stories high, it’s easy to get lost in this massive yet wonderful Portland treasure. Powell’s also has a number of smaller branches now, including one at PDX to browse before your next flight.

Green Bean Books

A bookstore made for kids and their ever expanding imaginations. Green Bean Books is dedicated to the books kids want and parents love in a store designed to be fun, colorful, and cozy. They also have frequent events such as storytimes (in multiple languages), summer camps, and craft stations.

Broadway Books

Started by two friends in 1992 wanting a great neighborhood bookstore, Broadway Books has become one of Portland’s favorite local bookstores. Broadway Books works to remain an active participant in their community and safe haven for any lover of stories.

Longfellows

If you’re looking for a quality, eclectic, family owned used bookstore, it’s Longfellows. Having opened in 1980, this well established bookstore will buy books and collectibles alike and works to have quality, rare finds. Unfortunately one of the owners recently injured their knee, meaning for the time being the hours for the store are limited. Just goes to show you how family oriented this store is! Definitely worth any bookworm’s attention.
