Mother’s Day Ideas That Don’t Involve Brunch
If you need a break from the Portland brunch craze but aren’t sure what to do for Mother’s’ Day this year, don’t you worry. Here are a few ideas that will hopefully allow you to avoid the insanity of Mother’s Day Brunch.
For the bookworm mom- try exploring Powell’s together
No matter how old your kids are, mom probably doesn’t get to spend as much time reading as she would like. For Mother’s Day, consider spending a relaxed morning wandering around Powell’s and letting her pick a few new books for her collection. Bonus points if you give her a quiet, free afternoon to curl up and read her new books while you and the kids take care of things around the house.
For the active mom- try the Run Mama Run marathon
While marathons are almost as popular in Portland as brunch, this marathon is dedicated specifically to the holiday. Created by moms wanting to celebrate their day getting exercise and hanging out out with the whole family, this is a perfect way to enjoy the day together.
For the new mom- try doing something memorable
A mom’s first ever Mother’s Day is an especially special event, so make sure whatever you do is something she can look back on fondly. (No pressure, right?). Avoid brunch by stopping at a bakery the day before for an array of pastries for a spectacular breakfast in bed. Maybe go on a family adventure, such as going to the zoo, and make sure to take lots of photos to remember the day. If you’re wanting to memorialize the day with a gift, consider something unique to her and your family such as a bracelet with the baby’s birthday engraved on it or a memory box of ‘baby firsts’.
For the mom who’s always cooking- try helping the kids learn to cook
Whether through youtube videos or one of Portland’s family cooking classes, spend some time leading up to Mother’s Day helping your kids learn to cook a special meal for the holiday. This way Mom gets a break from cooking while getting a fun, homemade surprise from the kiddos. Check out Portland’s Culinary Workshop for ideas of what you could try!
For the mom with a green thumb- try checking out the flower show
Happening Mother’s Day weekend, take mom to see the Rhododendron Show and Sale. If nothing else, just make sure to get outside and around the things mom loves (weather permitting), whether that be greenhouses, gardens, or flower shows. She’ll love it.
